How Families Can Support a Young Person's Independence Journey

Family support plays a vital role in a young person's journey to independence. Here are practical ways families can help — even from a distance.

The journey to independence is rarely walked alone. Even when a young person is living in supported accommodation, family support — where it is safe and positive — can make an enormous difference to their progress and wellbeing.

Here are some practical ways families can support their young person:

Stay in regular contact

Regular phone calls, texts or visits (where appropriate) help young people feel connected and less isolated. Even a short message can make a big difference on a difficult day.

Celebrate their achievements

Moving into supported accommodation, getting a college place, or opening a bank account — these are huge milestones. Acknowledging them matters more than you might realise.

Respect their space and independence

One of the goals of supported accommodation is to help young people develop their own decision-making skills. Try to offer guidance rather than direction — trust that they are learning.

Work with the support team

If you have concerns, please contact us directly. We are here to work in partnership with families wherever possible. Your insights and knowledge of your young person are valuable to us.
